The Subtle Art of Protecting Your Energy

Fall carries the false promise that we can keep the same pace we had in summer with its long days, endless events, constant motion…just layer on a cozy sweater. But the truth is, autumn isn’t built for that grind.  It has its own vibe to offer.

Shorter daylight hours naturally cue your body’s circadian rhythm to slow you down. And Ayurveda reminds us that this season is about conserving energy, not scattering it. Ignore this, and burnout creeps in fast…often followed by illness.

So, one of the simplest ways to protect yourself right now is to create ‘mindful margins’.

That means instead of rushing from one commitment to the next, you intentionally build in a buffer space before and after - enough to at least catch your breath and center.

Think…

  • After getting all dolled up for a dinner out, sit for a quiet moment before heading out the door.

  • Give yourself an unscheduled hour after your work event.

  • Luxuriate for a whole Sunday morning by yourself before the week starts.

Sounds nice, right? Why? Because your mind, heart, and nervous system need space to integrate your experiences. The diminished daylight signals your body to wind down and recharge with the adjustment of melatonin production.

Ignoring this natural rhythm leaves you fried, depleted, and way less present for the things that actually matter. But with it, you get to experience life more fully, instead of just racing through it.

Remember:

  • Rest is productive.

  • You don’t owe everyone a yes.

  • Wellness isn’t an indulgence. It’s a right.

  • Protecting your capacity isn’t selfish, it’s strategy.

Your Ritual:

Say no to one thing that doesn’t serve you/feel good/sound fun that you reasonably can. Then, when you do say yes, give yourself 20-30 minutes of unscheduled space on either side of the event. Notice how different it feels to show up grounded in your own flow, not rushed by what isn’t yours.
